Song Of the Shirt Press Release

Remembering and re-visiting The Song of the Shirt

 Tuesday 15th October 6:30– 8:30pm

Leyden Gallery are pleased to present the filmmakers Sue Clayton & Jonathan Curling in conversation about their seminal 1979 film The Song of the Shirt

This is a unique opportunity to meet the filmmakers and hear about the history of this important film. It is presented in conjunction with Sue Clayton's wonderful photographic installation called ‘Fournier Street’ - shown for the first time in Leyden Gallery’s inaugural exhibition Fabricate.

At Leyden Gallery’s invitation, Sue Clayton was asked to consider making a creative response to her 1979 feminist film Song of the Shirt. Sue Clayton’s involvement in Leyden Gallery’s inaugural show Fabricate enables a dialogue to emerge from the historical film. It is a conversation which addresses the plight of the Victorian seamstresses of Spitalfields in a new context. Clayton’s creative response has resulted in a beautiful series of photographic images, a renewed narrative dimension and a gallery installation. Although still concerned and dealing with the historical fabrications/narratives that surround the icon of the Victorian seamstress, she now finds herself out of time and yet remains in the same vicinity of Spitalfields, which happens also to be the location of Leyden Gallery.

The timeliness of Leyden Gallery’s show and Sue Clayton’s new intervention is being received very well and several institutions, including The Whitechapel Gallery, Genesis Cinema & Gallery and Birkbeck UOL with Laura Mulvey, have all expressed interest in developing further events this year with Leyden Gallery in relation to this remarkable film and Clayton’s new photographic installation.

In May 2013 The Song of the Shirt, was screened at Iniva as part of the Keywords Exhibition, which is travelling to the Tate Liverpool in March 2014
